On September 27, 2026, another lecture was held at the Cultural Center in Ranilug as part of the Morava Spiritual Evenings, jointly organized by the Draganac Monastery and the Humanitarian Organization “Kosovsko Pomoravlje.”
The guest speaker was Very Rev. Prof. Dr. Vladimir Stupar, a priest at the Cathedral Church in Sarajevo and a professor at the Faculty of Orthodox Theology of the University of East Sarajevo, based in Foča.
The evening’s discussion focused on the topic “Death Is Not the End” — one of those subjects that is rarely easy to talk about, but which, from a Christian perspective, does not lead to despair, but to hope.
Death as a Theme of Life
At the very beginning of the discussion, Father Vladimir said:
For us Orthodox Christians, if I may put it that way, death does not exist. We are witnesses to Christ’s Resurrection
He explained that for two thousand years, the Church has proclaimed the joy of the Resurrection, and that death, as we know it in this world, is a consequence of humanity’s turning away from God.
Speaking about the meaning of life, Father Vladimir emphasized:
Outside God and apart from God, there is no life
As he explained, the subject of death cannot be understood without the subject of life, because “death is, in fact, the other side of the same coin as life.”If a person does not know what life is and who the Giver of Life is, they cannot truly understand what death is either.
Human Beings as Beings of Love, Freedom, and Life
He particularly emphasized that human beings were created as beings of love, freedom, and life:
What makes us like God is that we are beings of love, beings of freedom, and beings of life.
That is precisely why freedom is one of God’s greatest gifts to humanity, but also a gift that carries responsibility.
The conversation also touched on the fear of death. Although Christians believe in the Resurrection, this fear often remains within us. Father Vladimir reminded those present that, for a Christian, death is not destruction, but a falling asleep and a passage:
For those who belong to Christ, death does not exist
This does not mean that a person does not experience pain, grief, and separation, but it does mean that death does not have the final word.
Holy Communion as Essential to Christian Life
One of the evening’s most powerful messages was that Christian life must not be reduced to formality, custom, or habit.
Father Vladimir spoke about the importance of repentance, confession, prayer, and the Divine Liturgy, emphasizing that Holy Communion is a necessity for a Christian, not a reward:
Holy Communion is our necessity
Speaking about modern society, he pointed out that people are increasingly distancing themselves from God, prayer, and those around them, seeking life in things that are temporary.
“One of the characteristics of our time is that prayer has disappeared,” he said, adding that without prayer, a person can easily lose their sense of eternity, of other people, and of their own soul.
Living in Hope of the Resurrection
At the end of the discussion, one message remained clear: a Christian does not live out of fear of death, but out of hope in the Resurrection.
“Death Is Not the End” is not merely a comforting phrase, but the essence of the Christian faith. Life is grounded in Christ, while love, prayer, repentance, and the Divine Liturgy open the way toward eternal life.
