Teacher from Lipljan about our Summer School

Bogdan Mitić, a teacher from Lipljan, shared his impressions of the Kosovo Pomoravlje Summer School, which his students attended last year. This year, children from Lipjan will participate again, accompanied by their favorite teacher.

Summer School: Great Joy for Lipljan’s Children

When this young teacher first heard about the Summer School program, he was thrilled, as it was the first time such an initiative was organized in Kosovo and Metohija. Memories from last year’s school are still being shared among the children.

“What excited me most were the people genuinely trying to do something beautiful for the children. The kids were thrilled, enjoyed meeting new friends, and bonding. It’s interesting that they still talk about moments and participants from last year’s school, even though a year has passed. This shows how meaningful it was for them to have such a program during summer break.”

Children in Lipljan Limited to School and Church Yards

Although Lipljan is a warm town full of parks, playgrounds, and walking paths, Serbian children often spend their time only in the school and church yards. Other areas are considered unsafe, limiting them during holidays to home and courtyard.

“We are the only school in Serbia that operates on Saturdays. On Mondays, the market day in Lipljan poses a risk for children’s safety, as the market is right next to the school. This says a lot about how limited children’s activities outside of school can be. Growing up today is challenging everywhere, but children in Kosovo and Metohija face particular challenges. Yet, in general, children outside this region feel a greater sense of security and freedom.”

Play and Socializing Are What Children Miss Most During Summer

To compensate for the lack of free movement, teachers organize excursions for the children, often to nearby monasteries. Teacher Bogdan explains that camps like the Summer School are extremely important for children during summer.

All the teachers I know try their best to brighten the lives of children in Lipjan and create lasting memories. In my opinion, children need to socialize with peers, and the summer school is an excellent place for making friends, playing, and learning new skills. Through play, they learn useful lessons from school and explore new activities. This year, I’m excited to take talented children to the camp according to Professor Rajović’s program because every child deserves to have their talent recognized and nurtured.”
