As part of the Morava Spiritual Evenings, a lecture titled On Confession was held in Pasjane. Bishop Ilarion of Novo Brdo spoke about the importance of the Holy Mystery of Confession, spiritual renewal, and preserving community.
Lecture on confession in Pasjane gathered many faithful
Within the Morava Spiritual Evenings program in Pasjane, a lecture entitled On Confession brought together numerous monks, clergy, and faithful from the area.
The guest speaker was His Grace Ilarion, Bishop of Novo Brdo, who addressed a full audience at the Cultural Center “Sveta Bosiljka” about the significance of the Holy Mystery of Confession in the life of every Christian.
The hall was filled to capacity, and those present listened attentively to the bishop’s words. The lecture was organized with the aim of deepening the understanding of confession as the foundation of both personal and communal life in the Church.
The double meaning of confession: praising god and repentance
At the beginning of his talk, Bishop Ilarion explained the dual meaning of the word “to confess” — both to praise and to repent. Referring to the Psalm, “O give thanks unto the Lord, for He is good,” he emphasized that confession is not merely the acknowledgment of sins, but also the glorification of God.
He stressed that without confession there can be no true praise of God, nor authentic spiritual life. Confession brings us into a living relationship with God and opens the path to spiritual renewal.
Continuing his address, he pointed out that confession is necessary if we are to live free from the burden of sin. A person entrusts his or her burden to the Lord Jesus Christ, who came to bear the sins of the world.
Confession also has a communal dimension. It preserves and renews community — marital, ecclesial, and monastic. Everything that separates us from communion should be confessed and offered to the Lord.
What Should Be Confessed?
The bishop also spoke about what exactly should be confessed. Referring to Christ’s temptation in the wilderness, he explained that there are three categories of sins that must be confessed:
• love of pleasure
• love of glory
• avarice
He particularly emphasized the importance of personal preparation for confession. This preparation includes prayerful self-examination before the icon before which we pray. However, personal prayer alone is not enough without the Holy Mystery of Confession. One must go beneath Christ’s epitrachelion to one’s priest and confess the sins of which one is aware. There, absolution and spiritual relief are received.
Responding to the question of how often one should confess, the bishop noted that balance is essential in all things. He advised the faithful to confess at least four times a year, before the major fasting periods, but also whenever they feel a spiritual need. Confession should not be reduced to a mere rule. On the other hand, it should not be avoided, knowing that we carry the burden of sin.
