Life at K&M

HO Kosovsko Pomoravlje with young artists

The exhibition “Return to Measure and Silence” was held at the Cultural and Parish Center KPC Božidar Mitrović Šandor in Šilovo as part of the Saint Sava Academy celebrations. This marks the first exhibition of students from the Faculty of Arts in this part of Kosovo and Metohija. A total of 12 scholarship recipients of the Kosovsko Pomoravlje Humanitarian Organization took part in the exhibition. The event was organized by Draganac Monastery and our organization.

The curator of the exhibition was Professor Saša Filipović, with whom we spoke about the importance of this exhibition, the position of young artists, and the message behind returning to measure and silence.

The Exhibition Was Held on the Occasion of Saint Sava’s Day

Is the title a message to the time we live in?

Absolutely. The title is both symbolic and contemporary. We live in a time of constant noise  visual, informational, emotional where we are expected to constantly react, produce, and remain visible. In such a context, returning to measure and silence becomes an act of resistance.

Connecting the exhibition with Saint Sava’s feast is not accidental. His work was grounded in inner composure, thoughtfulness, and balance between spiritual and practical life. That model of moderation and calmness may be more necessary today than ever. Therefore, this exhibition is not only an artistic event but also an invitation to slow down and truly listen.

How important are measure and silence for young people?

Measure and silence are, in my opinion, the foundation of every maturation process. Without silence, there is no artistic dialogue, and without measure, there is no mature relationship with oneself or others. A young person who constantly reacts to external stimuli can hardly hear their own inner voice.

In art, this is especially visible. Creation requires time, concentration, and the ability to discard something. Measure implies choice, and choice implies maturity. That is why artistic and personal development are inseparable processes.”

Do young artists today create under the pressure of visibility?

The pressure is undoubtedly great. Today, artists are often expected to be authors, promoters, and brands all at once. Social media impose speed and superficiality, while art by its very nature demands slowness and depth.

Authenticity, in my experience, is preserved through distance  through the conscious decision not to follow every trend and not to produce at any cost. Young artists who manage to preserve their own rhythm of work, who remain faithful to the process rather than only the result, create the most convincing works.

What Is the Most Important Message of the Saint Sava Legacy Today?

The most important message for young people today is that knowledge and character go hand in hand. Saint Sava teaches us that success has no meaning if it is not grounded in values. In a time of superficiality, that call to depth and integrity serves as a precious anchor.

Is there a difference in the artistic expression of young people from Kosovo and Metohija?

Living conditions always shape artistic expression. It is not a matter of talent, but of experience. Young people from Kosovo and Metohija often carry a stronger sense of existential reality. Their works are more direct and personal, infused with themes of belonging, identity, home, and memory.

That kind of experience gives a particular emotional density.
On the other hand, students in Belgrade have greater exposure to contemporary movements, media, and theory, which brings experimentation and conceptual breadth.

However, despite these differences, what unites them is the same need to understand the world around them through art. In that sense, art becomes a space of freedom, regardless of circumstances.”
