Christmas in the villages of Novo Brdo has not passed for years without our traditional gift-giving for the children.

Since ancient times in Novo Brdo, families have eaten Christmas Eve dinner on the floor and straw. After the evening service, the family gathers around the table, and the meal is blessed with incense and prayer. This is how the Nativity fast comes to an end. It is a custom that early in the morning every home is visited by a “položajnik” usually a relative or neighbor, and in the past few Christmases, that role has often been played by us from the Kosovo Pomoravlje Humanitarian Organization!

How do Serbs in Novo Brdo celebrate Christmas?

When the endless hills become covered in snow, and the scattered Serbian hamlets tucked between them withstand the winter drifts, it is time for us to prepare the gifts and head toward the “golden town,” just like Christmas Father.

Many families in Jasenovik, Izvor, Boljevac, Labljane, Prekovce, and Paralovo have received Christmas oak branches from us over the years. Serbs have lived in these villages of the Novo Brdo region for centuries. Life in these mountain settlements sometimes fairy-tale-like, sometimes harsh has endured through all kinds of hardships. And somehow, it always rises again and blossoms like a ripe winter apple on the windowsill, long-awaited, or like a child’s smile at the doorstep.

At each gate, we are greeted by the strong, work-weathered hand of our hosts. By the smile of a mother or grandmother. By rosy, cold little faces peeking from behind the door. Every doorstep is adorned with an oak branch, every chimney lit early in the morning, and from the windows comes the scent of freshly baked Kosovo “banica.”

Over coffee and a festive toast, while the children enjoy their gifts, we ask our people how life is in each place. It is often from these conversations that we learn who needs help, what would be useful for the children, the youth, or the elderly…

Many of these conversations stay with us long after our visits end. They remind us daily to fight for every child’s smile we saw that day, for every door we knocked on, for every home we visited.

Our photos are filled with emotional, tearful embraces. But only children’s hearts truly remember the joy that filled all of us as we visited them for the holidays.
