Volunteering that changes lives in Kosovo and Metohija

By volunteering with our organization, we change the lives of Serbs in Kosovo and Metohija.

At a time when it seems that solidarity is fading, our Humanitarian Organization stands as proof that compassion and community still bring hope and purpose. As young people who live and want to stay in Kosovo and Metohija, we began our humanitarian mission through the Kosovsko Pomoravlje Humanitarian Organization. Our goal is clear  to systematically improve the lives of those who refuse to give up their right to live with dignity on their own land.

Volunteers play a key role in our organization young and old, students and professionals  all those willing to invest their time and energy in something greater than themselves. Their stories show that volunteering is not only about helping others but also about personal growth and transformation.

Volunteering as Freedom and Life Experience

Slavoljub Trišić, one of our long-time volunteers, says that volunteering with HOKP is special because it combines freedom and structure:

“It’s very interesting because there’s a lot of room to create and contribute, and no one limits your ideas  as long as they make sense, of course. There’s freedom, but also a clear direction and purpose in what the organization does.”

That creative freedom is best seen through humanitarian actions and charity events. Slavoljub recalls a special moment when he and a friend organized a charity auction for a Partizan football jersey:

“We were raising funds to buy computers and tablets for students in Kosovo and Metohija. We sold the jersey for around 30–40 thousand dinars  that’s still my biggest personal contribution”.

But as he says, the most emotional moments are tied to the Kosovsko Pomoravlje Summer School, held this year in Štrpce, where children built strong bonds with volunteers and teachers in just a few days.

The hardest part was saying goodbye. Their farewell hugs and words left a deep impression on me.”

Volunteering as community and humanity

Katarina Kojić shares a similar experience. She joined HOKP in 2022 during her teaching practice in Parteš.

“Being a volunteer at HOKP is a truly unique experience. You can feel that your time and effort directly change someone’s life for the better. There’s a real spirit of unity, kindness, and humanity.”

Katarina’s volunteering journey began quite spontaneously  from sorting aid packages to visiting schools and kindergartens. Very soon, she became part of teams organizing donation drives, community events, and social media campaigns.

“Anyone can join  all you need is the will and the wish to help.”

Her favorite memories come from school supply donation drives.

“When we handed notebooks, pencils, and backpacks to the kids, their bright eyes and big smiles were worth every effort.”

A special moment for her was saying goodbye to the children after the Summer School:

“They stood by their gates waving goodbye, thanking us for being part of the Summer School. I especially remember two Serbian children who live alone with their parents in a small hamlet — no neighbors, no playmates, just nature and animals. That’s when I realized how big a blessing our work truly is.”

A Message for Future Volunteers

Both volunteers agree that being part of the Kosovsko Pomoravlje Humanitarian Organization is not only an act of kindness but also a chance for personal growth.

Slavoljub says:

“Everyone should join this story — it’s a chance to fight for noble causes in a real, everyday way. It’s an invaluable experience.”

Katarina adds:

“Never think your contribution is too small. Every bit of help, every hour of your time, every smile you share means more to someone than you can imagine.”

The Kosovsko Pomoravlje Humanitarian Organization continues to grow thanks to people who selflessly give their time and energy. Their stories show that volunteering changes not only the lives of those who receive help but also of those who give it.
