The difficult life of the Vasić family: Father struggles to feed his children

Not far from the famous golden town of Novo Brdo, once a rich mining center during the reign of King Milutin, lies the village of Jasenovik.
On a hill above the village, surrounded by forests and pastures, lives the Vasić family. Nature here is beautiful and peaceful, but the life of this family is far from easy.

A house that barely protects from the cold

In front of their old and worn-down house stand large containers filled with water that the Vasić family brings from the village, as there is no running water in the home. The roof has sunk in, and sheets have been placed over the windows and doors to keep the wind from entering. Inside, it is cold. The stove must burn almost the entire night just to warm the house a little. There are no proper floors, and the furniture is old and worn out. Moisture has seeped into the walls, mattresses, and blankets. When warmer days arrive, life becomes a bit easier for the family. They spend most of their time outside then.

Childhood under an old pear tree

Nikolina and Nikola spend almost the entire day in the yard. At the edge of the property stands an old pear tree. Beneath it hangs a swing where the children spend hours, looking up at the branches and the sky. Their father Saša and their older brother Stefan take care of them the most. Their mother helps around the house as much as she can. Unfortunately, due to health problems, she is not able to take care of the children and the household on her own, so most responsibilities fall on their father.

Stefan – a boy with big responsibilities

The oldest son, Stefan, is still a child, but he already carries many responsibilities. Every day he walks a long distance to school. When he returns home, he helps his father and takes care of his younger brother and sister.
This is what his childhood looks like — balanced between school and family duties.

The battle with little Nikolina’s Illness

The Vasić family’s biggest concern is not only poverty. Five-year-old Nikolina was recently diagnosed with a growth delay of as much as 20 centimeters. Every evening she receives growth hormone therapy, and the treatment will continue until she turns sixteen. That means years of medical checkups, travel, and additional expenses for the family.

A Father’s wish

The Vasić family currently lives on social assistance. Most of the money goes toward Nikolina’s treatment and doctor visits. Father Saša cannot leave his family to look for work far away from home, because his children need him every day. His greatest wish is to revive their small property — to cultivate the land, raise livestock, and provide at least the basics through his own work: bread and milk for his children.

A call to action

We have launched a humanitarian campaign to help the Vasić family. Our hope is that by Easter we will be able to provide them with better living conditions.
We invite you to join us and help. Together, we can make this children’s childhood at least a little easier.
