Let’s celebrate Nikola – a boy who is in fourth grade and the only student in his class.

Let’s celebrate Nikola – a boy who is in fourth grade and the only student in his class.

Nikola Stanković is a fourth grader at “Petar Kočić” Elementary School in Slivovo, and he is the only student in his class.
He spends his school days with his teacher, and during breaks, he is alone. Nikola is also the only child in the entire school from first to fourth grade and probably its last enrolled student.

The school is located in a private house. It doesn’t have a computer or any other teaching tools, apart from desks, a blackboard, and chalk. Nikola also doesn’t own a computer, so he studies with his teacher using only books.

When we asked this quiet and withdrawn boy what school is like for him, his short answer was: “Boring.”
As a little child, Nikola struggled with speech problems. Growing up in such isolation made overcoming them even harder.

Let’s celebrate Nikola Stankovic

He spends most of his time with his father and brother, helping them with their small farm and livestock. He rarely plays. When asked why, he says it’s simply not fun because there’s no one to play with.

The Stanković family, along with just a few remaining Serbian households, lives in Slivovo, near Priština. They raise three children on one modest income and in very humble conditions. The older sons moved away to find work, while the third son is still in high school.

Every day, Nikola’s father, Negovan, drives him to Gračanica since there’s no school bus to Slivovo. He knows Nikola will eventually follow his brothers, because there is no future for him here.

Negovan says he hasn’t expected help for a long time. He has come to terms with the fact that his children must leave if they want a better future.

When asked how life in Slivovo feels, he simply smiled and said: “The way it has to be when no one asks how you are…”

👉 If you are able, please support our campaign to buy a computer for Nikola Stanković and help us brighten his childhood!
