Just before the end of August and the start of the school year, we visited the youngest students in Lipljan. Thanks to the generosity of our friends, who, even while living across the world, keep the children of Kosovo and Metohija in their thoughts, hearts, and prayers, we made the return to the classroom a joyful experience for all the lower-grade students at the “Braća Aksić” Elementary School in Lipljan.
New Backpacks and School Supplies for Lipljan Children
New backpacks, notebooks, school supplies, and sports equipment for physical education, totaling €1,500, were gifts from our friends. We presented them to the children in the beautiful churchyard of Lipljan’s parish church. Nineteen little students, representing all the first-to-fourth graders in the school, welcomed us with great excitement and joy. Their priest and teacher introduced us to the history of the old and new churches in Lipljan and shared insights into the life of Serbs in this part of Kosovo
Serbs in Lipljan Stay United Around Their Church
Although not often mentioned publicly, Serbs in Lipljan place great importance on preserving their heritage and staying connected to their community. A testament to this is the preparation for the consecration of frescoes in the new church dedicated to the Holy Martyrs Florus and Laurus. Built in the mid-20th century as a gift from King Alexander Karađorđević, the frescoes depict the Gospel, our saints, new martyrs, and the late Metropolitan Amfilohije and Bishop Atanasije. The gilded and painted works bear witness to the sacrifices these people are willing to make for their church and for Lipljan.
