Action for the school in the village of Bratilovce
30. September 2025.
The humanitarian organization Kosovo Pomoravlje has launched a campaign to collect donations for the school in the village of Bratilovce, in the municipality of Kosovska Kamenica.
After nearly 30 years of closure, conditions in Bratilovce have finally allowed schooling to resume. The local branch of the school was closed in 1994 when the village had no children. Since then, the school building and yard have been neglected, and after the 1999 war, all school equipment was stolen.
Due to the heavy snowfall expected in winter, the priority is to replace the completely worn-out roof. School workers have started repairing the old roof, but it is unlikely to withstand the winter conditions. The next major project will be digging a well, as the school currently has no water supply.
The school building has been largely restored. Staff from the “Desanka Maksimović” School in Kosovska Kamenica have spent the past few weeks repairing and cleaning the school and its surroundings. Old floors were removed and replaced, carpentry work was done, walls were replastered and painted, and electricity was installed. For now, two classrooms and the teachers’ office are ready for use.
Currently, the school’s voluntary fund does not have enough resources to continue the work. The staff needs financial support to carry on with the renovation.
The school is located at about 800 meters above sea level. This mountain village near Kosovska Kamenica is blessed with fresh air and abundant natural resources. Considering its climate and environment, the school administration has decided to convert unused school space into facilities for an outdoor educational program a “school in nature.”
The plan is to provide conditions for educational and recreational activities that support the physical, mental, and social development of children. By building a health trail, open-air classrooms, workshops, and student accommodations, the school will create opportunities for children to adopt an active, healthy, and creative lifestyle.
This type of learning and interaction is especially meaningful for children from remote rural schools, often with very few students per grade. This project will help broaden knowledge and experience about the natural environment, develop ecological awareness, and foster socialization, tolerance, and responsible behavior toward oneself, others, the environment, and cultural heritage.
We invite everyone who can to contribute, helping complete the school’s renovation and support the initiative for creating a unique school in nature, where children from Kosovo and Metohija can gather, learn, and socialize.
